Cape Town’s wine tourism is set for a significant boost with the launch of the Wineland Wonders initiative, a digital guide that showcases the city’s exceptional wine routes. The initiative was unveiled by Alderman James Vos, the Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Growth, who emphasized the importance of highlighting the unique wine experiences in and around Cape Town.
Alderman Vos expressed his belief in the value of Cape Town’s world-class wines, not only for attracting tourists but also for stimulating economic growth. “I’ve always believed that our world-class wines represent a fantastic value proposition,” he stated. “That’s why I encouraged the Tourism and Place Marketing Branch to develop this guide—to highlight Cape Town’s rich wine culture and help people explore our stunning wine farms.”
The significance of wine tourism in the region cannot be overstated. In 2022, it contributed a remarkable R3.05 billion to South Africa’s economy. An impact study by the South African Wine Industry Information and Systems revealed that the wine industry in the Western Cape created over 245,000 jobs that year. Moreover, for every R1 million invested, 3.36 jobs were generated, which is more than double the national average of 1.18 jobs. “Our wines are not only award-winning but also vital for job creation and economic development,” Alderman Vos noted. “This guide will make it easier for locals and visitors to discover new farms or revisit old favorites.”
What’s Included in the Wineland Wonders Guide?
The Wineland Wonders guide provides users with comprehensive information on various wine regions, featuring an interactive WhatsApp channel. It highlights approximately 40 wine farms across three primary wine routes:
- Constantia in the Southern Suburbs
- Helderberg (part of the Stellenbosch Wine Route)
- Durbanville Wine Valley
With just a few taps, users can select their desired wine route and set Google Maps for directions. The guide also includes details on different wine varietals, as well as dining options and scenic venues in the vicinity.
This initiative promises to enhance the wine tourism experience in Cape Town, allowing both locals and visitors to explore the rich offerings of the region’s renowned wine farms.
