Econet Strengthens Its Market Dominance

The Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ) has released its third quarter 2025 industry performance report, painting a clear picture of the country’s fast‑evolving telecoms sector. At the top of the market, Econet Wireless Zimbabwe continues to dominate across all major indicators.

According to the report, Econet controls:

  • 73% of mobile phone subscribers
  • 87% of voice call traffic
  • 82% of total data usage
  • The largest share of telecoms infrastructure nationwide

This commanding position highlights Econet’s ability to maintain customer loyalty while expanding its network reach. The company’s infrastructure investments have ensured reliable connectivity, giving it a competitive edge in both urban and rural markets.

Starlink Expands Its Footprint

Satellite internet provider Starlink is steadily gaining ground in Zimbabwe. POTRAZ data shows that Starlink added about 10,000 new subscribers during the third quarter. This growth reflects rising demand for alternative internet solutions, particularly in remote areas where traditional mobile operators face challenges in extending coverage.

Starlink’s expansion is reshaping the connectivity landscape, offering high‑speed satellite internet that appeals to households and businesses seeking reliable broadband outside major cities.

Africa Fibre Network Emerges as a Strong Contender

Another highlight of the Q3 report is the rapid growth of Africa Fibre Network (Dark Fibre Africa). As a new entrant, the company is investing heavily in fibre infrastructure, aiming to provide faster and more stable internet services. Its growth signals a shift toward diversified connectivity options, reducing reliance on mobile data alone.

Industry analysts believe Africa Fibre Network’s expansion could significantly boost Zimbabwe’s digital economy by improving broadband access for enterprises and consumers alike.

Revenue Trends: Data Services Drive Operator Earnings

Zimbabwe Telecomms POTRAZ’s findings also reveal how mobile operators are generating revenue:

  • 49% of revenue comes from data services
  • 36% of revenue is generated from local voice calls

This revenue breakdown underscores the growing importance of mobile internet in Zimbabwe. Consumers are increasingly relying on data for communication, entertainment, and business, mirroring global trends where data has become the backbone of telecoms revenue.

Outlook for Zimbabwe’s Telecoms Industry

The Q3 2025 telecoms report highlights a sector in transition:

  • Econet remains the dominant player, but competition is intensifying.
  • Starlink’s satellite service is carving out a niche in rural connectivity.
  • Africa Fibre Network’s fibre rollout promises to diversify internet access.
  • Data services are now the primary revenue driver for operators.

As Zimbabwe’s digital economy continues to expand, the telecoms sector will play a pivotal role in bridging connectivity gaps, fostering innovation, and supporting national development. The coming quarters are likely to see even greater competition as new technologies and players reshape the market.
